Father Involvement

Girls with active and hardworking dads are more ambitious, more successful in school, more self-protective, more likely to attain careers of their own, and attend college more often. They are less dependent, and less likely to date or marry abusive men. When adolescents rate their fathers high on nurturance, they are less likely to engage in drug abuse, truancy, stealing and problem behavior.

Two-thirds of children of divorce report poor relationships with their fathers. Thirty-four percent of US children do not live with their biological father; 40 percent of these children have not seen their father at all in the past year and half have never set foot in their fathers' home.

A fathers' support of his daughter's physical/athletic development lessens gender role rigidity, promotes her social independence, and encourages educational and career success in young adulthood.
